Visual Manual Project | Introduction to Interactivity

You will choose a household object and create a visual “how-to” that restricts the use of words and numbers. Assume the viewer of your manual has never seen or used your object, regardless of how common it is. This assignment will walk you through a step-by-step process that will enable you to create a clear and concise manual comprised of only visuals.

Course Description

This introductory course focuses on basic interaction and motion design principles for the purposes of creating interactive media. A variety of prototyping processes will be introduced, where you will move seamlessly between digital and physical constructs. You will learn the value of user testing and feedback through a process of involving outside participants in a project’s development process. Coursework seeks to engage you in a highly iterative practice of sketching, prototyping and user testing — while emphasizing core design values, material skills, and craftsmanship for both analog and digital environments. Historical and contemporary contexts will be used to frame the assignments.

Objectives
In this course students will learn to:

  • Design from a user-centered point-of-view;
